Subject: Thanks for a wonderful performance!
Dear Misha,
Thank you again for the great job today! Our students and faculty loved your
performance, and my Russian students enjoyed the special opportunity they had
to meet you. We got some good ideas for our performance of "Kalinka". The
dresses that Valya wore were beautiful, and we're going to try to copy some of
the things for our performance. They're going to wear large red bows in their
hair and long full skirts with Russian shawls wrapped around the waist. I have
lots of the shawls so they should look fairly authentic.
Many thanks to you, Alyosha and Valya for the interesting and enjoyable show
today. You all speak excellent English, and you know exactly how to get the
audience involved. You and Alyosha both have a great sense of humor and good
timing. As you saw the audience was very attentive and enthusiastic. You had
excellent control of the crowd, and I know they all had fun and learned
something from you. As I told you today I think there were between 700 - 750
people there. Our theater holds about 880, and it was very close to being
full.
I would definitely like to plan something for next year, but with the larger
group. I'll need to have an approximate price so I'll know what to shoot for.
There are several grants I can apply for, and I hope I'll be able to find the
money.
It was so nice to meet all of you today, and I hope to see you again soon.
Please let me know if you'll be performing in Brighton Beach. I might be able
to talk my husband into going.
Thanks again!
Marcy
P.S. -- I'll be sending you the video as soon as it's ready. Thanks for letting
us tape the show.
During our annual Celebration for Children from Eastern Europe,
our adoptive families were delighted with Barynya’s exciting and engaging performance.
Their costumes were as bright and lively as their music.
The balalaika trio, led by Mikhail Smirnov, treated us to Russian folk song and dance and entertained
children as well as their parents...
We look forward to a return engagement by Barynya that will spark their imaginations.
Sincerely, Jennifer Fuschetti

Russian New Year's characters Father Frost and Snow Maiden
Ded Moroz and Snegurochka (Russian: Дед Мороз и Снегурочка)
Father Frost and Snow Maiden are the most important characters of the New Year's celebration in Russia. Father Frost (Ded Moroz, Russian: Дед Мороз) plays a role similar to that of Santa Claus. The literal translation of the name would be "Grandfather Frost". However, English-speakers traditionally translate "DED MOROZ" as the alliterative "FATHER FROST". Ded Moroz is always accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka - Snow Maiden (Russian: Снегурочка).
New York based ensemble Barynya created a special Russian New Year's program with traditional Russian winter songs, dances and music: "In the forest a fir-tree was born" (V Lesu Rodilas' Yolochka), "Small Fir Tree is Freezing during the Winter" (Malen'koi Yolochke Kholdno Zimoy), "The snowstorm is blowing along the street" (Metelitsa), "Father Frost" (Moroz-Moroz), "Five minutes" (Pyat' Minut).
Ded Moroz and Snegurochka are available for hire in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania (within 100 miles driving distance from New York City). For a fast price quote contact Mikhail Smirnov
