Ethnic Russian Music album recorded by New York based Russian dance and music ensemble Barynya (Artistic Director/Founder Mikhail Smirnov) in December 2006. Recording was made in Philadephia, PA ("AS IS RECORDING STUDIO", Alex Siniavski, owner). Album contains favorite Russian melodies and songs "The Moon is shining brightly", "Two Guitars", "Katyusha", "Moscow nights", "Korobushka", "Kupets", "Stakanchiki" and others performed on Russian garmoshka, balalaika, Gypsy and classic guitars and contrabass. Balalaika is Russian folk guitar with triangular body shape. The back of balalaika is slightly bowed. Three strings run from the tuning pins over the metal frets on the neck across soundboard and secured on the base of the instrument. Garmoshka (also known as garmon') is a Russian folk button accordion, musician who plays "garmoshka" called in Russia "Garmonist". Garmoshka is a free-reed wind instrument. It has two rows of buttons on the right side, which play the notes of a diatonic scale, and two or three rows of buttons on the left side, which play the primary chords in the key of the instrument as well as its relative harmonic minor key. Garmoshka has 25 treble buttons in two rows: Three diatonic octaves plus three accidentals and 25 bass buttons in three rows: Two rows of eight buttons, with bass notes and chords; one free-bass row. Sasha (Alexander Petrovich) Menshikov is considered to be one of the best performers in Russian Gypsy style in New York. He is a professional singer with many years of experience. Alexander is a native of the small town Bugulma, now Republic of Tatarstan. He studied singing in The Gnesin Academy of Russian Music in Moscow, Russia. In 1990 he performed in the Russian television show "Step to Parnas," which is similar to "American Idol" in the United States. Before he immigrated to the United States in 1992, Sasha was a rising star in Russia. Ruslan Khain is a professional bass, contrabass, balalaika contrabass player based in New York. Ruslan started to perform with Russian music and dance ensemble Barynya in 2005. Ruslan graduated from the Russian Conservatory for Music in St. Petersburg. Classically trained from the early age of five, Ruslan has been exposed to and fascinated by music from the beginning. Worlds away from the birthplace of the jazz art form, at seventeen he discovered the great recordings of Count Basie, Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald and, later, such greats as Jimmy Blanton, Charlie Parker, Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, Monk and Bud Powell. Ruslan decided to take up the acoustic bass not long after discovering this intriguing genre of music, while attending the Mussorgsky College of Music. Artistic Director and founder of ensemble Barynya Mikhail Smirnov is a professional Russian folk singer, performer and musician with many years of experience. He plays garmoshka (Russian diatonic accordion), balalaika, classic guitar, jaleika, kugikly, contrabass balalaika and gusli. Mikhail Smirnov’s specialty is traditional Russian folk music and songs from various regions of Russia. As a student of Moscow State University of Culture and Arts Mikhail went to many different parts of Russia such as Tver, Smolensk and Belgorod to collect Russian folklore. Known expert in Russian Gypsy music Vasily Romani hails from the Moscow Gypsy Theater Romen and is now based in New York City. He has toured extensively nationally and internationally and recently led his group, Vasily Romani Gypsy Band, in a concert at Carnegie Hall.
