Tatar dancers at the Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award, Brooklyn Music School, Brooklyn, New YorkNYC Tatar Dancers | photos | videos | Facebook page | contactThe three recipients of the award were: Dr. Loree Sutton, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, Mayor Bill de Blaso’s Administration; Komal Ahmad, CEO/Founder, COPIA; and Herbert Sweat, a former Vietnam veteran, a community leader, board member with Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ). There were two honored guest speakers, Specialist Shoshana Johnson, the first African-American female prisoner of war in the military history of the U. S., and Major Wilem Wong. The afternoon will feature an array of world music and cultural dances by Miri Ben-Ari, Grammy award-winning violinist, Thunderbird American Indian Dance Company, The Mighty Zulu Nation, belly dancer Yuliya Shtark, Egyptian Derwish Dancer Yasser Darwish, Afro-Cuban Ensemble Roman Diaz, African Dance Company Kowteff West, and African Stilt Dancers. Ensemble Barynya's dancers and musicians provided 15 min performance of Tatar, Ukrainian, and Russian traditional dances, music, and songs performed on balalaika and garmoshka.
