Russian Christmas Music desciptions and lyrics

1. Carol of Bells (Ukrainian folk song Shchedrik)

Hark how the bells, Sweet silver bells,
All seem to say, Throw cares away
Christmas is here, Bringing good cheer,
To young and old, Meek and the bold,
Ding dong ding dong that is their song
With joyful ring All caroling
One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere filling the air
Oh how they pound, Raising the sound,
O'er hill and dale, Telling their tale,
Gaily they ring While people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here,

Merry, merry, merry, Merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, Merry Christmas,
On on they send, On without end,
Their joyful tone To every home
Dong Ding dong
Ding, dong Bong

2. Waltz by V.V. Andreev, father of Russian Balalaika

3. Deck The Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

4. Birch tree (Russian folk tune)

Father Frost - Russian folk song "Oi, Moroz, Moroz"

Oh Frost, frost
Don't freeze me.
Don't freeze me
And my horse.

And my horse,
My white-maned horse.
I have a wife
Oh, she is jealous

I have a wife.
Oh, she is a beauty
She waits for me at home,
She waits, she is grieving for me.

I am coming to her
At the sunset of the day.
I will embrance my wife
And I will groom my horse.

Those were the days, my friend - Dorogoi Dlinnoyu
Traditional, translation Gene Raskin

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours,
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought theyd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we chose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance Id see you in the tavern
Wed smile at one another and wed say

Those were the days...

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Those were the days...

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go, laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.

A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot

A day or two ago, the story I must tell
I went out on the snow, and on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by, in a one-horse open sleigh
He laughed as there I sprawling lie but quickly drove away

Now the ground is white, go it while you're young
Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you'll take the lead

Evening bells/
lyrics by Thomas Moore, translation E. Kozlov

Those evening bells! Those evening bells!
How many a tale their music tells
of youth, and home and that sweet time,
When last I heard their soothing chime.

Those joyous hours are past away,
And many a heart that then was gay
Within the tomb now darkly dwells
And hears no more these evening bells.

And so 'twill be when I am gone;
That tuneful peal will still ring on
while other bards will walk these dells,
and sing your praise, sweet evening bells.

И крепок их могильный сон;

В долине ветер разнесет;

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Jolly old Saint Nicholas,
Lean your ear this way!
Don't you tell a single soul
What I'm going to say;
Christmas Eve is coming soon;
Now, you dear old man,
Whisper what you'll bring to me;
Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,
When I'm fast asleep,
Down the chimney broad and black,
With your pack you'll creep;
All the stockings you will find
Hanging in a row;
Mine will be the shortest one,
You'll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates;
Susy wants a dolly;
Nellie wants a story book;
She thinks dolls are folly;
As for me, my little brain
Isn't very bright;
Choose for me, old Santa Claus,
What you think is right.

10. Gori, Gori (Burn, Burn, Gypsy Love)

Gori, gori, lyubov' tsyganki
Lyubov' krasavitsy smuglyanki
Gorit nad nami sila vlastnaya
Gorit odna lyubov' prekrastnaya...

Burn, burn, gypsy woman's Love
Love of beautiful swarthy woman
Burn above us great power
Burn one beautiful love

11. Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
while fields and floods,
rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessing flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of His righteousness,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders, wonders of His love.

12. I met you
lyrics by Fedor Tyutchev, translation by F.Jude

I met you and the past
came back to life in my dead heart.
Remembering a golden time,
my heart became so warm.

Just as in late autumn
there are days, the transient hour,
when suddenly spring wafts again
and something stirs within us,

so, winnowed within by the breath
of fullness my soul knew in those years,
with a rapture I thought I'd forgotten,
I stare into your dear face.

As if we'd been apart for ages
I stare at you and think I'm dreaming,
and suddenly sounds unsilenced in me
could be heard within me, but louder!

That was more than reminiscence:
my life began to talk once more,
as did in you that very same charm,
as did in my soul that very same love!

В отжившем сердце ожило;

13. Folk Carol from Smolensk region of Russia

14. Kalinka (Russian folk song)

Juniper, juniper, juniper, my juniper,
In the garden there's the berry, my raspberry.

Under the pine, under the green pine,
Lay me down to sleep

Oh you dear pine, oh you green pine,
Don't you rustle so loud over me

Beautiful maid, dear maid,
please fall in love with me!

15. Snowstorm (Russian folk song Metelitsa)
"Snowstorm is blowing along the street"

Katyusha
Text: M. Issakowski, Music: M. Blanter

Apples and pears were blossomin
Mist on the river floating
On the bank katyusha stepped out
On the high steep bank.

Stepped out, started a song
About one grey steppe eagle
About her loved one
Whose letters she cherished.

Oh song, maiden's song
Fly towards the clear sun
And to the warrior on a far away border
Bring katysha's greeting.

may he remember this simple maiden
and hear her signing
may he save our motherland
and love, katyusha will save

Поплыли туманы над рекой;

17. Snow Maiden (Snegurochka)

Под полозом скрипит;

18. The Moon is shining brightly (Svetit Mesyats) Russian folk song

14. Polyushko-Pole (O, Field, Field)

Meadowlands, wide meadowlands,
Heroes cross the fields,
Ekh, heroes of the Red Army.

Girls are crying,
Today the girls are downhearted,
Their dear ones have gone away,
Ekh, away to the army.

Girls, look there,
Look there, out on our road,
The distant road is pulsing,
Ekh, the jolly road.

But out there we see,
We see a grey storm-cloud,
The enemy's evil in the forest,
Ekh, the enemy's evil, like a storm-cloud.

Ekh, girls, look there,
We're ready to take the enemy,
Our quick-legged steeds,
Ekh, our quick-moving tanks.

Ekh, let the work
Bubble gaily in the kolkhozy,
We're supervisors today,
Ekh, today we're sentries. --

20. Moscow Nights (Podmoskovnye Vechera)
Music - V. Solovjov-Sedoj, lyrics - M. Matusovskij
Not even a whisper is to be heard in the garden,
Everything has calmed down until dawn.
If you only knew how dear they are to me,
The evenings near Moscow!

The river is moving and (sometimes) not,
All made of the moons silver.
A song sounds and is not to be heard
In those quiet evenings.

Why do you, darling, look at me from the side,
Bending your head so low?
It is not easy to tell
All the things that are in my heart.

And dawn is getting more and more visible.
So, please, be so kind:
You, also, dont forget
These summer evenings near Moscow.

21. Murka

Hello, my Murka
Darling Murka,
Hello, my Murka,
and goodbye

22. Girl Nadya (Devochka Nadya) - two step dance

- Oh, girl Nadya,
What do you want?
- I want nothing,
but chocolate...—

23. Dark Eyes (Ochi Chernye)

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Dark eyes, flaming eyes
They implore me into faraway lands
Where love reigns, where peace reigns
Where there is no suffering, where war is forbidden

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Without meeting you, I wouldn't be suffering so
I would have lived my life smiling
You have ruined me, dark eyes
You have taken my happiness forever away

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

24. Steppe (Step' da step' krugom)
Traditional, lyrics by E. Surikov

Steppe, endless steppe,
the way lies far before us,
and in that dense steppe
a coachman lay dying.

He summoned up all his strength,
as he felt death approaching,
and he gave an order
to his comrade:

"My dear friend,
do not think of the bad times,
but bury me here
in this dense steppe.

Give to my wife
a word of farewell;
and give back to her
this wedding ring.

And tell her that I died here,
in the freezing steppe,
and that I have taken her love
away with me."

25. Tzar Nikholai

Employees of the company enjoyed gifts distributed by Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, they loved live New Year's music, khorovod dancing, lots of Facebook and Instagram photos with popular Russian Winter Characters. For the khorovod and singing Russian favorite New Year's songs Ded Moroz played garmoshka when Snow Queen used the Russian folk instrument balalaika. This was the second time for brand new colorful valenki, and red costume for Ded Moroz.

Russian New Year's Characters Father Frost and Snow Maiden Ded Moroz and Snegurochka

Father Frost and Snow Maiden are the most important characters of the New Year's celebration in Russia. Father Frost or Ded Moroz (Russian: Дед Мороз) plays a role similar to that of Santa Claus. The literal translation of the name would be "Grandfather Frost". However, English-speakers traditionally translate "DED MOROZ" as the alliterative "FATHER FROST". Ded Moroz is always accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka - Snow Maiden (Russian: Снегурочка).

New York based ensemble Barynya created a special Russian New Year's program with traditional Russian winter songs, dances and music: "In the forest a fir-tree was born" (V Lesu Rodilas' Yolochka), "Small Fir Tree is Freezing during the Winter" (Malen'koi Yolochke Kholdno Zimoy), "The snowstorm is blowing along the street" (Metelitsa), "Father Frost" (Moroz-Moroz), "Five minutes" (Pyat' Minut).

Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, Ded Moroz, Grandfather Frost, and The Christmas tree (Yolka)

The origin of Santa Claus is in St. Nicholas. He was born in Asia Minor at at the Greco-Roman city of of Myra in the province of Lycia, at a time when the region was entirely Greek in origin. Due to the suppression of religion during the Soviet regime, St. Nicholas was replaced by Ded Moroz or Grandfather Frost, the Russian Spirit of Winter who brought gifts on New Year's. He is accompanied by Snyegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps distribute the gifts.

The Christmas tree (Yolka) was banned during the Soviet era. To keep the custom alive, people decorated New Year's trees, instead. Since ornaments... read more
