An elderly man dressed in a thick gray coat brought in
an old balalaika. He said he wanted to sell it to the
best balalaika student. The Professor thought it over
and decided that the right to buy this balalaika by a
famous russian luthier Nalimov, also called the
Balalaika Stradivarius, belongs to Alyosha Siniavski.
Needless to mention that the amount of hastily
gathered 1,500 rubles would have been enough to buy a
brand new domestic car or to bribe a Party bureaucrat.
1991. Long Island, NY. 1st string
Right before the New Year with a merry zing went the
string. Broke, that is. I ran to the music store on
Glen Cove Rd. My English is nonexistent. I show to the
sales guy my balalaika and the broken string. In
return he shows me $20. Everybody watches us with a
vivid interest. I am thinking to myself that my Moscow
Olympic Games 80 balalaika is worth about $2 and
that 20 bucks is way over my budget. Later I whined a
string from a guitarist who played in
Garanyan-Frumkin’s jazz orchestra. That trophy string
is still intact although very rusty.
1992. Harrisburg, PA
We are hanging out at a local bar where a pint of beer
is 40 cents. Our English is O.5 per cent. Conversation
with the barman:
- Where are you guys from?
- We is from Brooklyn.
The barman says to his buddy:
- Them people from Brooklyn can’t speak no English.
We are proud that for the first time somebody took us
for the Americans.
1993. Alexander Ressetar
We met an American balalaikist from Texas named Sasha
Ressetar. He drinks vodka like a sailor and plays
balalaika with a pick. Lezginka, Polyushko, Katyusha
and one pleasant tune that is unfamiliar to us. Turns
out this is the Lara's theme from a movie about doctor
Zhivago. We are respectfully nodding out heads. The
room smells of borsch and the musicians’ boots.
1994. Lakewood, NJ. The Monarchist
After Christmas Ball at the Rodina Cultural House we
were invited to dinner by a famous Monarchist. If his
word could be trusted the incumbent Tzar himself used
to stay at his house on his trips to America. We are
obediently listening, awaiting dinner and drinking
expensive cognac. The Monarchist is interested in our
opinion about restoring monarchy in Russia. I answer
right away that the Russians had already lost a habit
of having a Tzar and undoubtedly will not be happy if
this turns around. The Monarchist takes out his saber
ready to cut us to pieces. His Mistress of the house
politely asks us to leave. We end up having dinner at
Boston Market.
1995. Angels
After an endless gig in Monticello, NY we stopped for
a cup of coffee. There were about 40 bikes around a
small road tavern. There were hairy men inside in
black leather jackets with something about Angels on
them. We order black coffee with lemon and tea with
milk. They look suspiciously at us and soon start an
unpleasant conversation. We explain that we are not
commies but mere Russian balalaikists. To prove that
we need to play Lara’s theme from Doctor Zhivago. The
tension is gone, we are offered Bud Light and let go.
There was a dude sleeping in our car when we returned.
He couldn’t figure out why those Russians wanted to
take his car.
1996. A Russian nuoveau-riche from Fort Lee, NJ
A New Year’s party in unbelievably expensive apartment
of a Russian businessman in Fort Lee, NJ. Among other
things, the owner of the apartment brags that he just
bought a enormously expensive very old counter bassoon
by Nalimov with the same coat-of-arms trade mark like
our Lyokha Siniavski’s balalaika. We are ecstatic! We
thought Nalimov made only 147 balalaikas and maybe a
couple of bass drums, and as far as we knew he had
nothing to do with the woodwinds. But the
Nuoveau-Riche popularly explains to us that he was
mass producing the balalaikas for the plebes but for
the real connoisseurs he was making the counter
bassoons. At least we didn’t have to play Lara’s theme
that night.
1997. The Policeman
We are coming back from a New Year’s party in ritzy
town of Lattington, Long Island, NY. Got lost. Made a few illegal
U-turns. In a couple of minutes we were pulled over by
a cop who literally appeared from a thin air.
-Who are you? What are you doing here?
-We are russian musicians, going home from a party.
-Have you been drinking?
-Yes, a couple of beers. (I told him the truth and
nothing but the truth. He never asked about vodka.)
-What is in you trunk?
-A balalaika...
The cop looks at the balalaika for a long time with a
puzzled expression on his face. We are playing Lara's
theme with the stiff from cold air fingers. He gives
us a warning and disappears back into a thin air. The
warning says: No mandolin or other similar instruments
playing in Oyster Bay County after 10 PM.
We were lucky this time.
1998. Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Somebody called and offered a good price for a short
appearance on New Year’s Eve party at a private house
in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. We arrive and see an empty
dark house with a sight that says FORECLOSURE. Someone
joked. Thank God, our friend - contrabass balalaika
player Leonid Bruk - lives close by. He was extremely
happy to see us, but for some reason did not invite us
in.
1999. Wawa Convenience Store
On a way to a gig we stopped at Wawa to get
directions. An old serious Mexican was drawing some
arrows for a long time. All of a sudden I remembered
that left my expensive garmoshka in an unlocked car. I
am rushing out to the car just to find out somebody
just put in another garmoshka!
2000. Russian Resort Alessya, Hunter, NY
We are playing on a New Year’s party. An aged female
singer asks us to accompany her in her own rendition
of Lara’s Theme. The words are her own as well. Eight
choruses seemed too long to me but the audience sort
of liked it and even meekly clapped. In short, the
meaning of the song was that cold winter is no
obstacle to love, but it is still a bad idea to leave
a handsome groom alone with a cute bride’s maid.
Pasternak is slowly turning in his grave.
2001. Santa Claus in the Balalaika Restaurant, NJ
Dressed up as Santa Claus I entertained the guests all
night. Every guest thinks he/she should have a drink
with Santa who sings Russian limericks and plays
garmoshka. Poor Santa! No wonder he needs a year
after that to come back to his senses! Every man goes
through tree stages in his life: when he believes in
Santa, when he doesn’t believe in Santa and when he is
Santa himself!
2003. Black caviar from a Rich Man’s table
New Year’s party in apartment of media tycoon Donald
Newhouse (#55 in 2002 Forbes list of the World's
Richest People, Net Worth: $5,000,000,000.00) We are
next to the real Picasso. Next to us is a little dog
with a big diamond on her collar basking in a
fireplace’s warmth. The Rich Man’s wife attentively
listens to us and asks to play Lara’s theme from
Doctor Zhivago. After that she brings us a huge bowl
of caviar and a bottle of vodka. Lyosha Siniavski
declines and I eat half ot that bowl. Advice: don’t
consume to much of it or you’ll be sorry. Or maybe it
was vodka that wasn’t very fresh?
2004. The Newark Museum
December 26. Free admission to concert of Russian folk dance and music ensemble Barynya lured the
most inquisitive and sophisticated. During the show we
usually ask audience’s opinion on Russia’s
whereabouts. One man quite seriously thought it was
near Arizona, another suggested Alaska. We also talked
about why the Russians celebrate Christmas two weeks later than the rest of the world.
People thought it was because of the time difference.
Russia is way behind America and they know it in New
Jersey.
2005. The Liberty Island
September 2005. Barynya Ensemble is performing on the
Liberty Island, right under the Statue of Liberty. The
cream of the crop of the balalaika community of New
York is here. Russian oligarch Roustam Tamiko is
introducing his new Imperia. Everything is covered
with black caviar and other Russian delicatessen,
everywhere there are rivers of vodka and hordes of
stunningly beautiful models. New York is shocked by
the magnitude of the Russian party. Near the island,
on a barge "Duran-Duran" is warming up. Our singer Sasha
Menshikov, still sober, says: Holy bleep! Bleep
Duran-Duran is opening for bleep Barynya!
- We is from Brooklyn.
