HAZLET (New Jersey Transit's North Jersey Coast Line in Hazlet, Monmouth County, New Jersey)

Inside Gwyneth Paltrow’s Latest Wellness Adventure: Bee Sting Therapy
Article by Elizabeth Varnell, April 6, 2016 9:01 AM, Vogue.

Ever the wellness adventurer, Gwyneth Paltrow recently caught our attention when she said she’d experimented with bee stings, a painful but ancient technique said to reduce inflammation and skin scarring. While the bee-related health benefits of honey, royal jelly, and pollen are well known, bee venom is more of a mystery. Certainly, this more extreme form of apitherapy, utilizing melittin, the active compound in bee venom with anti-inflammatory properties, is not for everyone—after all, it can cause anaphylactic shock or even (in extreme cases) strokes in those who are allergic. Still, for centuries, homeopaths have used live bees, placed on tender areas of the body or acupuncture points (either alone or with acupuncture needles), to treat a range of skin maladies and their underlying causes. Now venom can be stored for strategic injections, and the area can be numbed beforehand and precisely targeted. Homeopaths are currently still the biggest advocates and practitioners of apitherapy, though many M.D.s and specialists say they are keeping an eye on studies involving the practice. Bee Venom Therapy. By Chris Woolston, M.S.
Article from consumer.healthday.com

If you've ever been stung by a bee, you already have firsthand experience of the basics of bee-venom therapy (also called apitherapy). The only technical difference between the sting you got and the therapeutic kind is that yours was probably accidental. People who use bee venom for medicinal purposes don't wait around for random insect attacks. Using long tweezers, they pick up live honey bees (which they've usually raised themselves), put the insects next to their skin, and let them do what comes naturally. You might have thought that your single encounter with a bee was enough, but people undergoing apitherapy may get stung 80 times a day or more. Why would anyone subject himself to such pain? Because bee stings are thought to help ease the symptoms of a wide variety of diseases, including arthritis, multiple sclerosis, tendonitis, and fibromyalgia; they're also thought to promote desensitization to bee stings. These claims don't come from beekeepers looking for a profit; they're made by patients whose experience with bee venom has turned them into believers. One woman says that 80 stings every other day helped reverse her rheumatoid arthritis. A woman with multiple sclerosis found that the leg spasms she'd been having calmed down after she started using bees to sting herself a few times each day. Bee Venom Therapy. Article from The Bee Venom Therapy Foundation (BTER)

Bee Venom Therapy (BVT) is the therapeutic use of honey bee venom, either injected by stings from live bees or injected by needles. BVT is used to treat a variety of ailments, primarily neurological and immunological, including chronic pain, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. Bee venom therapy is sometimes called “Apitherapy” (from the Latin word for bee, “apis”); but Apitherapy is also used to refer to treatment with other bee products, such as honey, pollen, royal jelly, and propolis. Therefore, we will use to term “Bee Venom Therapy” (BVT) to refer specifically to the injection of bee venom. Bee venom therapy (BVT) has been recognized for over 5,000 years as being helpful in the treatment of diseases and injuries. Early hunter-gatherers drew images on rocks depicting the honeybee as a source of medical treatment. BVT was practiced by ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Greek therapists, including Hippocrates. BVT was studied by the Austrian physician Phillip Terc in his 1988 “Report about a Peculiar Connection between the Bee Stings and Rheumatism.” But it was Bodeg Beck, a Hungarian who moved to America after World War I, who brought apitherapy to the United States. Charles Mraz, a beekeeper from New York, met Beck in the 1930’s and advanced the popularity of Apitherapy significantly. He treated people with bee stings for arthritis pain for over sixty years, was a founding member of the American Apitherapy Society, and authored Health and The Honey Bee in 1994, which recounted his experiences with BVT. Research about bee venom therapy continues today. In 2004, South Korean researchers published a study (Hye Ji Park, et al. “Anti-arthritic Effect of Bee Venom: Inhibition of Inflammation Mediator Generation by Suppression of NF-KappaB Through Interaction With the p50 Subunit.” Arthritis and Rheumatism, 2004 Nov; 50(11); 3504-3515.) in which they gave rats with advanced rheumatoid arthritis low does of bee venom. BVT dramatically reduced tissue swelling and osteophyte formation on affected paws, showing a correlation between the anti-inflammatory properties and anti-arthritis effects of bee venom. In a study at Georgetown University School of Medicine (Washington, D.C.) to evaluate the safety of honeybee venom extract as a possible treatment for patients with progressive forms of multiple sclerosis, the results were so encouraging that the researchers called for expansion of the clinical trials (Castro HJ, et al. “A phase I study of the safety of honeybee venom extract as a possible treatment for patients with progressive forms of multiple sclerosis.” Allergy Asthma Proc. 2005 Nov-Dec;26(6):470-6). BVT has also been utilized to treat Lyme Disease, as discussed in the 2015 article “Can Apitherapy Treat the Symptoms of Lyme Disease?” by Tom Odor. As yet, there is no legally marketed venom extract in the U.S.A. to use in BVT. Read full article here: http://www.bterfoundation.org/bee-venom-therapy/

Holistic Health: Overview and Benefits of Bee Sting Therapy. Article by Cathy Wong

Bee sting therapy is a type of alternative therapy that involves administering bee stings at specific points on the body. Also known as bee venom therapy and apitherapy, bee sting therapy is said to aid in the treatment of various health conditions. In some cases, bee sting therapy involves injecting bee venom (rather than using live bees). According to proponents of bee sting therapy, bee venom contains compounds with anti-inflammatory effects. By reducing inflammation, these compounds are said to promote healing and alleviate pain. One of the bee-venom compounds found to possess anti-inflammatory properties is called melittin. In alternative medicine, bee sting therapy is touted for the following health problems: Rheumatoid arthritis, Bursitis, Eczema, Headaches, Low back pain, Migraine, Multiple sclerosis, Psoriasis, Tendonitis. So far, studies on the health effects of bee sting therapy have yielded mixed results. While some research suggests that bee sting therapy may help treat certain health conditions, other research indicates that the therapy may be of little benefit. Here's a look at some key study findings... Read full article here: https://www.verywellhealth.com/the-lowdown-on-bee-sting-therapy-88765

I Sting Myself With Bees 3 Times a Week. Article by Lauren Rothman,

It’s Monday morning, and as I stretch out in bed, I quietly assess the damage. Aching feet. Stiff neck muscles. A crushing sense of fatigue, even though I’ve just slept nine hours. Within a few seconds, I can already tell that today is not going to be one of my good days. In what now feels like a previous life, mornings would have me wandering, blearily-eyed, into the kitchen to fix myself some coffee. After a superleaded cup, my post-weekend weariness would be gone and I’d be ready to tackle my day. But this is my new life, and in my new life, my morning routine has taken a different shape. On this morning, I pick up a little wooden house stocked with live honeybees and head to the living room, where there’s adequate light. I open the house’s plexiglass sliding door, use a pair of long tweezers to grab the most docile bee I can spot, and drop the loaded tweezer into a specially constructed wooden rack. I repeat this process five more times, then quickly head back to my bedroom, where two mirrors I’ve angled towards each other allow me to see the length of my spine. I pick up the tweezers one at a time, a bee squirming at the end of each pair, and press it to my back, waiting for its burning sting. Within half an hour, the ritual will be complete, and I’ll have gotten my thrice-weekly dose of medicine into my system. Up until a year and a half ago, I was very physically active. A freelance writer, I filled my days to the brim, working on assignments, biking to faraway yoga classes, running along the broad parkway near my house and hosting impromptu dinner parties. I didn’t know that things would soon crawl to a standstill. Read full article here: https://www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/vb9mwa/i-sting-myself-with-bees-every-morning
