Gypsy, Jewish, Russian, Klezmer, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski is a native of Pyatigorsk, Southern Russia. Sergei graduated from Gnesin's Academy of Russian music in Moscow. Currently based in Queens, New York.

Russian, Gypsy, Jewish, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski He went on on to perform in such diverse venues as the Chamber Jewish Musical Theater in Moscow, the Krasnoyarsk Musical Theater in Siberia, the Karelia State Musical Theater and the Music and Comedy Theater in St. Petersburg. After touring Finland, France and USA as a member of the Classic Retro Trio, at present time Sergei lives and works in New York.

He has given many one-man shows of Gypsy and Russian music in St. Petersburg and has performed in many Russian cabarets. Although blessed with an outstanding tenor voice, he captures the raw passion and feeling of this musical genre.

From the 11th century on, the wandering tribes of Gypsies spread throughout the European an Asian continents, affecting the cultures they passed through but also absorbing their customs;

they were, and still are, at once imitated, nostalgically beloved, feared, persecuted and mythologized.

Russian, Gypsy, Jewish, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski There is no doubt that the Roma tribes that originated in Northern India have influenced the music and the arts of their many adoptive countries, infusing it with a spirit of passionate improvisation, by turns sad, playful and raging. And yet, from whatever country a particular Gypsy song originates - be it Romanian violin music or Russian guitar ballads, Latin flamenco or the brass bands of Bulgaria - at the heart of it, there is the same love of freedom and beauty.

Gypsy singers were the best serenaders of yesterday and keep the passion alive in the present day. "There is no music I know that is more joyous than Gypsy dance music," says Robert Browning of the World Music Institute.

The Romantic Songs of the World with Sergei Pobedinski

Jews, along with Gypsies, were ruthlessly persecuted in the course of the Second World War. There is as much plaintiveness as playfulness in the Yiddish songs from Eastern Europe. The many hardships haven't destroyed the culture of romance in the songs, but rather refined its unique balance between the unallayed sadness and the gamely fatalistic good humor.

Russian, Gypsy, Jewish, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski Italian songs are credited for their tender, melodic approach to sound. Simple melodies lie in wait for a great voice that will color them and mold the basic ingredients into a spectacular performance. Italian romantic songs account for some of the world's all-time favorite tunes; they are not only the staple of Italian opera, routinely recorded and performed by its most renowned names, but permeate all aspects of Italian life; they can be heard at any small tavern throughout Italy, especially in the South.

Ukrainian folk songs are traditionally accompanied by fiddle, often joined by flute and tsimbaly (a kind of hammered dulcimer); being largely vocal-driven, however, they are easily transposable to guitar. Moody and unpredictable - a raucous stomp one second, a drone-like dirge the next - Ukrainian music occupies a unique middle ground between the minor-key melodies of Russia and the more robust tunes of the Balkans.

In their originality, Ukrainian folk songs have served as a direct inspiration to a number of Classical composers, including Mussorgsky and Prokofiev. Songs vary by region (the music of the mountainous Karpaty region, for instance, may sound surprisingly un-Slavic to the Western ear) as well as by occasion: whole massive oeuvres are devoted to kolyadki (carols), wedding and christening music, laments and, of course, romantic songs - which can get both exquisitely lyrical and rather bawdy.

Russian, Gypsy, Jewish, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski

Russian, Gypsy, Jewish, Italian and American singer Sergei Pobedinski

Sergei Pobedinski and Mikhail Baryshnikov

Russian New Year's characters Father Frost and Snow Maiden
Ded Moroz and Snegurochka (Russian:

Father Frost and Snow Maiden are the most important characters of the New Year's celebration in Russia. Father Frost (Ded Moroz, Russian: Дед Мороз) plays a role similar to that of Santa Claus. The literal translation of the name would be "Grandfather Frost". However, English-speakers traditionally translate "DED MOROZ" as the alliterative "FATHER FROST". Ded Moroz is always accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka - Snow Maiden (Russian: Снегурочка).

New York based ensemble Barynya created a special Russian New Year's program with traditional Russian winter songs, dances and music: "In the forest a fir-tree was born" (V Lesu Rodilas' Yolochka), "Small Fir Tree is Freezing during the Winter" (Malen'koi Yolochke Kholdno Zimoy), "The snowstorm is blowing along the street" (Metelitsa), "Father Frost" (Moroz-Moroz), "Five minutes" (Pyat' Minut).

Ded Moroz and Snegurochka are available for hire in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania (within 100 miles driving distance from New York City). For a fast price quote contact Mikhail Smirnov
