YAKOV YAVNO CAPTIVATES TORONTO
Review by Helen Klukach
Hello again, dear readers, your roving arts writer, journeyed up to the Lea Posluns Theatre on Tuesday June 27th, to see this acclaimed actor-singer. He is an iconic figure, as well as one of the greatest performers to immigrate from the former Soviet Union. Yakov was born in Minsk, Belarus, into a musical family, and received his formal education at the famous Gnesin Academy of Music in Moscow. He eventually became a leading actor at the Jewish Musical Chamber Theatre, also based in Moscow.
Yakov immigrated to the United States in 1990, and began touring the world on a regular basis, presenting his glorious bass-baritone at showcases, ranging in size from intimate cabaret-style acts to large-scale events. He has performed on stage at the Bolshoi Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, and the National Opera House of Tel-Aviv, as well as many other world-class concerts.
Now to return back to the concert which I attended that evening. The air of excitement and anticipation from this opening-night capacity crowd, quite literally crackled! And we were not disappointed, because Yacov glided unto the stage, and quite simply filled the entire theatre with his magnetic and hypnotic presence!
Yacov performed songs in Hebrew, Yiddish, English, Spanish, French and Russian. In addition to singing, he swooped, swirled and danced to the music, using his entire body, including his eyes, face, arms and feet! He was indeed, the ultimate entertainer, as most skillfully, he engaged your eyes, your ears, your senses, and your heart!
Towards the end of his performance, I hurried back stage, because I had already decided that I simply had to meet Yacov! When the last note sounded, the audience quite spontaneously sprang to their feet to give this multi-talented performer the due that he deserved! He strode from the stage as purposefully as when he had strode unto the stage at the beginning of his memorable performance!
I introduced myself, shaking his hand and congratulating him on his wonderful offering! Most graciously, he answered my questions about his rather astounding career, and during the interview, it came to light, that we shared a mutual friend, with whom he had studied in Moscow, and with whom he had starred in the same musical! That was another Russian-Jewish emigree, Igor Portnoy, who had come to Toronto almost ten years ago with a troupe of Russian performers doing a show called "Russians On Broadway". Igor had, along with about 16 fellow Russians from the Troupe, chosen to remain in Toronto, and had applied for Regugee status. Igor lived with my husband Jim and myself for seven months, before bringing his wife Elena and son Zenya to Toronto. He has remained in Toronto, and is presently working as a singer on cruise ships that travel the entire globe! Yacov asked me to convey his warmest regards to Igor, Elena and Zenya!
Congratulations and thanks are in order for the impressario, Svetlana Dvoretskaya of Show One Productions, for continuing to bring to Toronto, the calibre world-class entertainment, that she has! In fact, Svetlana told me that Yacov's first show had sold out so quickly, she had to book him, as well, for Wednesday evening June 28th, which was also sold out! Bolshoye spacibo Sveta!
