Alexander Prokhorov, bass-baritone, originally from Russia, now lives in Boston, where he is engaged as one of the performing artists with Boston University's Opera Institute. Alexander has been described as a "true deep bass with tones, that immediately astonished with their midnight-dark, chasm depth of richness and powerful timber... a fine singer who has a fluid, musical legato that expressed the music's message with drama and excitement..."
Alexander's recent operatic roles are Escamillio in (Peter Brook's rendition of Bizet's Carmen) La Tragedie de Carmen with Boston University Opera Studio, Bottom in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream, Nicki in Richard Wargo's Seduction of a Lady both with Boston University Opera Studio, Colline in Puccini's La Boheme with Lowell Opera House, Ashby in Pucinni's La Fanciulla del West with the Boston Music Academy and Ferrando in Verdi's Il Trovatore with Boston Bel Canto Opera. In the 2003-2004 season, he will appear as Raimondo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor with Boston Bel Canto Opera and as Don Pasquale in Donizetti's Don Pasquale with Boston University Opera Studio.
Alexander's solo concert appearances include the parts of Bass in Stravinsky's Les Noces with Ohio State University Chamber Orchestra, Handel's Messiah with the Sapphire Coast Music Festival in Australia, Bach's Magnificat in D with Boston Cecilia, Handel's Te Deum for the Victory of Dettingen, Haydn's Te Deum in C Major, Faurre's Requiem, Mozart's Messa Solemnis in C and Messa Brevis D-dur and Schubert's Messa G-dur.
Alexander graduated from the Music Academy of the Peter Tchaikovsky's Conservatory of Moscow in 1989 and from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2002 with a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance. Alexander was among the finalists in the Schubert and Bach vocal competition in Moscow in 1985, one of the finalist-winners of the NH Operafest! Competition in New Hampshire in January 2001 and the winner of the Longy School of Music Honors competition in Boston in June 2000, 2001 and 2002.
